Nigeria and Saudi Arabia hope a landmark memorandum of understanding will deepen defense and military cooperation between the two countries.
The agreement, signed December 9, 2025, in Abuja, comes as Nigeria confronts multiple security threats and seeks stronger international support to rebuild its defense capabilities. Nigerian officials called the memorandum “a significant milestone,” noting that it includes cooperation in training, joint exercises, intelligence sharing, technical support, logistics and other mutually agreed upon defense engagements.
The agreement will run for five years, with a renewal option. Either party can terminate it with three months’ notice. The agreement includes capacity building and training, operational effectiveness, and counterterrorism and internal security, according to Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation.
Saudi Arabia will offer “expanded opportunities for professional military education, specialist courses and training exchanges to raise the skill levels of Nigerian personnel,” the ministry said. The agreement will include joint exercises and shared doctrine that will improve operational compatibility and readiness across Nigeria’s armed forces.
The ministry said the two countries will cooperate on counterterrorism, counterinsurgency and intelligence sharing to support efforts against terrorism and organized crime.
Nigeria and Saudi Arabia share long-standing diplomatic, cultural and economic ties, “heavily influenced by religious connections through the annual Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages,” the online newspaper Premium Times noted. Both nations also work within multilateral bodies such as the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
In the past year, the two nations have begun to develop new partnerships. In January 2026, they signed their first bilateral agreement on the recruitment of general workers, creating a formal labor corridor, Business Insider Africa reported. The agreement will formalize Nigeria’s labor contribution to Saudi Arabia’s economy while ensuring worker protections.
