Avec cette nouvelle, les astronomes sont extr\u00eamement int\u00e9ress\u00e9s par la perspective d&rsquo;utiliser le plus grand t\u00e9lescope optique de l&rsquo;h\u00e9misph\u00e8re sud pour r\u00e9v\u00e9ler les secrets de la galaxie.<\/p>\n<p>La rapidit\u00e9 de temps de r\u00e9action et le fait d&rsquo;\u00eatre nettement meilleur march\u00e9 que les installations europ\u00e9ennes ou am\u00e9ricaines similaires pour produire des donn\u00e9es scientifiques sont des avantages concurrentiels majeurs, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 un astronome de haut rang du consortium SALT.<\/p>\n<p>Les scientifiques pensent que les \u00e9toiles neutrons, des objets d&rsquo;environ la taille du Soleil qui r\u00e9tr\u00e9cissent en fin de vie, finissent par produire des trous noirs. On sait depuis des dizaines d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es que ces objets incroyablement denses produisent des pulsars, qui \u00e9mettent des ondes radio r\u00e9guli\u00e8res et d&rsquo;autres rayonnements \u00e9lectromagn\u00e9tiques \u00e0 des rythmes pouvant aller jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 1.000 pulsations par seconde.<\/p>\n<p>Sur une colline de la r\u00e9gion d\u00e9sol\u00e9e du nord de la province du Cap, \u00e0 environ 350 kilom\u00e8tres au nord de la ville du Cap, le t\u00e9lescope SALT, dont la construction a co\u00fbt\u00e9 43 millions de dollars, a utilis\u00e9 son puissant outil d&rsquo;analyse de la lumi\u00e8re par spectroscopie afin de prouver l&rsquo;existence d&rsquo;une naine blanche pulsar.<\/p>\n<p>Partag\u00e9 par un consortium de partenaires de l&rsquo;Europe, de l&rsquo;Inde, des \u00c9tats-Unis et de l&rsquo;Afrique du Sud, le syst\u00e8me de la file d&rsquo;attente du SALT le laisse interrompre ses observations de routine pour focaliser son t\u00e9lescope optique de 10 m\u00e8tres en quelques minutes sur de nouvelles d\u00e9couvertes.<\/p>\n<p>En f\u00e9vrier 2016, le SALT a \u00e9t\u00e9 le premier t\u00e9lescope majeur \u00e0 obtenir le spectre d&rsquo;une supernova dans la galaxie voisine Centaurus A, quelques heures apr\u00e8s sa d\u00e9couverte.<\/p>\n<p>Il a \u00e9galement aid\u00e9 \u00e0 r\u00e9v\u00e9ler l&rsquo;une des plus importantes explosions jamais enregistr\u00e9es dans l&rsquo;univers, 200 fois plus importante qu&rsquo;une supernova typique, et qui se distinguerait par une luminosit\u00e9 exceptionnelle, \u00e9quivalente \u00e0 570 milliards de fois celle du Soleil.<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;Afrique du Sud partagera avec l&rsquo;Australie le site double du radiot\u00e9lescope le plus important et le plus avanc\u00e9 au monde, le \u00ab Square Kilometer Array \u00bb d&rsquo;un co\u00fbt de 2 milliards de dollars, qui \u00e9tudiera les origines de l&rsquo;univers et contribuera \u00e0 explorer l&rsquo;existence de la vie extraterrestre.
