Lorsque Fredie Blom est n\u00e9, l\u2019automobile \u00e9tait encore \u00e0 ses d\u00e9buts, le premier avion avait moins d\u2019un an et la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale n\u2019avait pas commenc\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Plus de 116 ans plus tard, M. Blom marchait toujours, avec une canne. Lorsqu\u2019il faisait chaud, il s\u2019asseyait \u00e0 l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur de sa maison dans le quartier Delft du Cap (Afrique du Sud) et fumait les cigarettes qu\u2019il adorait.<\/p>\n

\u00ab J\u2019ai v\u00e9cu pendant si longtemps par la gr\u00e2ce de Dieu \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 M. Blom \u00e0 l\u2019Agence France-Presse le jour de son anniversaire en mai 2020. Toutefois, environ trois mois plus tard, la longue vie de M. Blom a pris fin, suite \u00e0 des causes naturelles.<\/p>\n

M. Blom est n\u00e9 en 1904 \u00e0 Ad\u00e9la\u00efde, hameau rural de la province du Cap-Oriental en Afrique du Sud. Lors de son plus r\u00e9cent anniversaire, un Britannique \u00e2g\u00e9 de 112 ans \u00e9tait certifi\u00e9 officiellement comme l\u2019homme le plus vieux du monde, selon le Livre Guinness des records. L\u2019\u00e2ge de M. Blom n\u2019avait pas \u00e9t\u00e9 certifi\u00e9 par Guinness.<\/p>\n

Il se distingue parce qu\u2019il a v\u00e9cu pendant deux pand\u00e9mies mondiales notoires, la premi\u00e8re \u00e9tant ce qu\u2019on avait appel\u00e9 la grippe espagnole de 1918. Cette grippe avait an\u00e9anti toute sa famille.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mais le Covid-19 n\u2019a pas donn\u00e9 \u00e0 M. Blom une raison de paniquer. Il accepta avec \u00e9quanimit\u00e9 cette derni\u00e8re pand\u00e9mie. Il avoua sa consternation lorsqu\u2019on annon\u00e7a une disposition du confinement pour la pand\u00e9mie en Afrique du Sud : l\u2019interdiction de vente des cigarettes. Mais le gouvernement rel\u00e2cha plus tard l\u2019interdiction de vente du tabac, ce qui l\u2019aida \u00e0 r\u00e9aliser son souhait d\u2019anniversaire.<\/p>\n

Alors que sa famille c\u00e9l\u00e9brait son anniversaire, M. Blom, connu avec affection sous le nom de \u00ab Oupa \u00bb (grand-p\u00e8re), est sorti de sa maison pour aller s\u2019asseoir sur un fauteuil en bois. Sa belle-fille lui a pass\u00e9 du d\u00e9sinfectant sur les mains. Jeanette, son \u00e9pouse, l\u2019a bient\u00f4t rejoint. Ils s\u2019\u00e9taient tous deux mari\u00e9s il y a 46 ans.<\/p>\n

Les enfants du quartier et les petits-enfants de sa femme lui ont chant\u00e9 une chanson d\u2019anniversaire et ont appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 une assiette de nourriture chaude offerte par la famille de M. Blom.<\/p>\n

Lorsqu\u2019il est d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9, cela faisait plus de deux ans que M. Blom n\u2019avait pas consult\u00e9 de m\u00e9decin. Il d\u00e9clarait qu\u2019il en a assez d\u2019\u00eatre piqu\u00e9 et tripot\u00e9.<\/p>\n

M. Blom n\u2019avait jamais eu d\u2019enfants mais il avait adopt\u00e9 les deux enfants de Jeanette issus d\u2019un mariage pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent. \u00ab Il a tout fait pour nous \u00bb, d\u00e9clara en mai dernier Jasmien Toerien, sa belle-fille. \u00ab Il se levait \u00e0 3 ou 4 heures du matin pour se rendre au travail sur son v\u00e9lo. Il adore les animaux et le jardinage. \u00bb<\/p>\n

Sa longue vie a pris fin soudainement. Le 22 ao\u00fbt 2020, M. Blom est d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 de causes naturelles \u00e0 l\u2019h\u00f4pital Tygerberg du Cap. More than 116 years later, Blom still got around with the help of his cane. On warm days he would sit outside his home in the Delft neighborhood of Cape Town, South Africa, and smoke his beloved cigarettes. \u201cI have lived this long because of God\u2019s grace,\u201d Blom told Agence France-Presse on his birthday in May 2020. About three months later, however, Blom\u2019s long life came to an end by natural causes. Blom was born in 1904 in Adelaide, a rural hamlet in South Africa\u2019s Eastern Cape province. At the time of Blom\u2019s most recent birthday, a 112-year-old British man had been officially certified as the world\u2019s oldest man by Guinness World Records. Blom\u2019s age had not been verified by Guinness. He has the distinction of being alive for two notorious global pandemics, the first being the so-called Spanish flu of 1918. That flu wiped out his entire family. Even so, COVID-19 didn\u2019t give Blom reason for panic. He took the latest pandemic in stride. He did confess consternation at one of South Africa\u2019s pandemic lockdown provisions: a ban on cigarette sales. The government later eased up on tobacco sales, which helped him realize his birthday wish. As his family celebrated his birthday, Blom \u2014 known affectionately as \u201cOupa,\u201d which means grandfather \u2014 walked outside his home to sit in a wooden easy chair. His stepdaughter squirted his hands with sanitizer. His wife, Jeanette, soon joined him there. The two were married 46 years. Local children and his wife\u2019s grandchildren serenaded him with a birthday song and enjoyed a hot plate of food provided by Blom\u2019s family. Blom hadn\u2019t seen a doctor in more than two years before his death. He said he was tired of being pricked and prodded. Blom never had children, but he adopted Jeanette\u2019s from a previous marriage. \u201cHe has done everything for us,\u201d his stepdaughter, Jasmien Toerien, said in May. \u201cHe would wake up at three or four in the morning to cycle to work. He loves animals and gardening.\u201d His long life came to an end suddenly. On August 22, 2020, Blom died of natural causes at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town. More than 116 years later, Blom still got around with the help of his cane. On warm days he would sit outside his home in the Delft neighborhood of Cape Town, South Africa, and smoke his beloved cigarettes. \u201cI have lived this long because of God\u2019s grace,\u201d Blom told Agence France-Presse on his birthday in May 2020. About three months later, however, Blom\u2019s long life came to an end by natural causes. Blom was born in 1904 in Adelaide, a rural hamlet in South Africa\u2019s Eastern Cape province. At the time of Blom\u2019s most recent birthday, a 112-year-old British man had been officially certified as the world\u2019s oldest man by Guinness World Records. Blom\u2019s age had not been verified by Guinness. He has the distinction of being alive for two notorious global pandemics, the first being the so-called Spanish flu of 1918. That flu wiped out his entire family. Even so, COVID-19 didn\u2019t give Blom reason for panic. He took the latest pandemic in stride. He did confess consternation at one of South Africa\u2019s pandemic lockdown provisions: a ban on cigarette sales. The government later eased up on tobacco sales, which helped him realize his birthday wish. As his family celebrated his birthday, Blom \u2014 known affectionately as \u201cOupa,\u201d which means grandfather \u2014 walked outside his home to sit in a wooden easy chair. His stepdaughter squirted his hands with sanitizer. His wife, Jeanette, soon joined him there. The two were married 46 years. Local children and his wife\u2019s grandchildren serenaded him with a birthday song and enjoyed a hot plate of food provided by Blom\u2019s family. Blom hadn\u2019t seen a doctor in more than two years before his death. He said he was tired of being pricked and prodded. Blom never had children, but he adopted Jeanette\u2019s from a previous marriage. \u201cHe has done everything for us,\u201d his stepdaughter, Jasmien Toerien, said in May. \u201cHe would wake up at three or four in the morning to cycle to work. He loves animals and gardening.\u201d His long life came to an end suddenly. On August 22, 2020, Blom died of natural causes at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town.
